Thanks for the response. After thinking about it for awhile I figured it had to be related to the gas being unable to hold the water vapor. I assumed it was just being cooled too much by the piping and wellhead metal. It sounds like you are saying that the pressure drop accross the valves, an endothermic reaction, is largely responsible. Hadn't thought of that but it makes a lot of sense. In that case it is the area right past the valves that ice up, correct?

So how do they use methanol to prevent the icing, or de-ice the valves in the wellhead?
