Betamax was only incrementally better than VHS and was proprietary. SCMR's technology is better by a large multiple and they seek for it to be an open standard. In fact, it is better by such a large multiple it is what is referred to as disruptive. Incumbents usually have to be dragged kicking and screaming into a technology that is disruptive because their business plan is based on the previous model. Trying to keep a technology standard because your business model is based on it never works.
