John, re:...power rationing...

I think Intel's got PowerSWAT commando teams on alert to divert power from AMD's facilities. Unfortunately, that will probably only provide 10% of the requirement.

Re: U.S. Energy Secretary Bill Richardson ordered Northwest generators to sell electricity to California utilities Wednesday after state regulators warned that low power supplies could force rolling blackouts.

The problem is that California's Public Utility Commission again turned down an appeal from the utilties that they be allowed to charge more than $250/MWH for generated power during peak conditions. Since the peak pricing for the natural gas used to generate the incremental capacity works out to an equivalent price of about $1,000/MHW, operators of the gas peakers in California have been discovering a lot of critical maintenance that must be done "right now" and have taken some of these plants off line.

It's just another case of California being California - being baffled that plant operators don't want to buy $1,000 worth of gas to generate $250 worth of electricity.

Ref < what will happen to Intel when California goes on the Iraqi method of power rationing since the state is quickly running out of juice...>

The economic impact of a power outage on an Intel Wafer Fab plant would be extremely severe. However that WILL NOT HAPPEN !

1. Geographical Diversity : Only one Developmental Fab [ pilot line ] is in California. The rest are scattered worldwide. Oregon, New Mexico ,Arizona, Mass, Colorado, and Israel.

2. Uninterruptable Power Contracts: Brown-outs cannot happen. In addition the electric utility company provides multiple and spare transmission lines to ensure interrupted service.

All semiconductor manufacturers use similar strategies. Hyundai in Korea has a dedicated power plant next to a cluster of Wafer Fabs.
