Supermarket promotions. This is what I've
mentioned to people as a good way to promote
interactive TV and set-top boxes. You have to go
where everyday people go in order to expand the
user base beyond the techno-nerds, early
adopters, and audio-visual aficionados. TV shows
are promoted at supermarkets. You can promote TV
interactivity like TV shows where the TV watcher
has to get a new set-top box in order to join
the TV interactivity and get the content that
they have to have access to.
Particularly at this time of the year, you
will see supermarket grocery food stores selling
electronics beside the canned foods, the soft
drinks, and the cash register. Just the other
day, I was at a local Vons supermarket grocery
store where they were selling DVD players right
by the checkout stand. DVD players in the
supermarket grocery store! The DVD players were
strategically placed by the checkout stand as
impulse items for people to purchase for the
home or as Christmas gifts. When you see WebTV,
Web2U, AOLTV, and other interactive set-tops
being sold or advertised in your local
supermarket grocery store, then you'll know that
the interactive TV boom is really beginning to
happen in your part of the world. -ruel
