I saw that about cost not being as much as originally thought. I would point out that they mention 3G and not a technology. EDGE qualifies as 3G.

True...but as far as I know, bids are not being sent out on EDGE.

The roaming would be on an operator's own network (only new operators will have trouble).

I dont think that new operators will be in trouble....I simply think that they will be forced to try and provide nationwide coverage. The costs associated with roaming are exorbitant compared with providing the service yourself.

If the above does come true, we will see competition between W-CDMA and EDGE. I dont think that any on this board will be afraid of the results of that confrantation. Remember...for once, the CDMA portion of the equation will have economies of scale on both the handset and infrastructure on its side.

Mika,

Although AWS does include EDGE as part of their progression to 3G, it begs some questions. They previously claimed that they would move from TDMA to EDGE. Why the GSM-GPRS overlay now? AWS using EDGE provides no advantage to their new partner DoCoMo. DoCoMo didn't invest all those $$$$ in AWS so they could build a system that won't roam to Japan.

European auctions required at least one service provider to deploy UMTS. Is Europe going to be split between two 3G standards? Man am I confused.

Pete

Mika,

1.) What is your take on the Texas Instruments/Qualcomm news? We here have not really been able to get a good grip on the implications, as not many details were released.

2.) What are your thoughts about the May, 2001 roll-out of W-CDMA by NTT DoCoMo in Japan? It is the most hyped corporate technology roll-out since Windows 95, and we have started to see some cracks forming and hedging statements. Will they be able to make it? Whose Chipsets will be used?

I would like to say thank you for visiting the lion's den from time to time. It is good to get viewpoints from all sides of an argument, even if they don't match the group concensus. It is never boring when you show up.
