Mika, Agree that that month long World Cup 2002 (split hosted by Korea and Japan) will be a major focus of the operators to highlight their technology. It will be interesting to see the best that the systems can provide side by side. My bets are on 1X/HDR spanking W-CDMA 3-Nil.

The Winter Olympics 2002 will be no contest, by the way. Three of the four Utah CDMA providers already have data(Verizon, Sprint, Qwest - Cricket launching this month with voice only), and are very likely to have HDR in place by February 2002. I spoke with a friend who is a tech for Voicestream (only GSM carrier) last week, and he said they have no date yet for any data availability. As the Winter Olympics are large for Northern Europe, this will be quite the wake-up call for the European reporters to watch their American counterparts send in pictures and stories from the venues via HDR on laptops while they hunt for a land line on the ski hill.
