Would like to hear it or have a reference to it. mj, Your wish is granted: Contrary to popular opinion, the Internet as a complete, recognized entity did NOT exist in name or in form until the Congress passed a bill unifying several nets in the 80's, including the original DOD ARPANET, and turned the resulting entity over to administration by public and private organizations for the common good. Al Gore was instrumental in the successful passage of the important legislation that fundamentally defined and created this publicly accessible entity - the Internet. Even though people have gotten a good chuckle from the oft-quoted out-of-context misrepresentations of his remarks, truth be told we internet-niks truly owe Al Gore a debt of gratitude for his leading role in legally defining and creating this great thing we know as the Internet. You may hear things like: "1969 was when the Internet was actually created by the DOD." This is completely incorrect. This statement obviously cites the creation of the DOD funded ARPANET or DARPANET in 1969. Indeed, the ARPANET unquestionably provided the groundbreaking networking concepts that drove later work, nevertheless, the ARPANET was certainly not the Congressionally created public entity we regard as the Internet today even though many seem to think otherwise. I appreciate Al Gore's efforts to advance the nation's common good. I certainly hope that others appreciate it too. This is one of the (rare) "good things" a politician has done for us - why not celebrate rather than ridicule? --FaultLine =========== A few references: A comment by TigerPaw on the George W.
