Substitute drug trafficking for bootlegging. Does that still sound OK? Because that makes it true now...

Yup. I think drug laws are wrong, too. Just like alcohal prohibition - none of the state's business. All it does is create real crime due to artificially inflating the price.
You don't hear of many people stealing stereos to support their Prozac habit, or street gangs waging turf wars over Celebrex.

Decriminalize drugs and let Merck, Bayer, and RiteAid do to the Cali cartel, the mafia, and the Crips what law enforcement will never be able to do - eliminate them.
Take all the money being wasted on drug "enforcement" and direct it into prevention programs for young people and treatment programs for the addicts who want to quit; *then* we'll start making some meaningful headway in dealing with the situation.

... and one thing you cannot avoid is that Joe was breaking the law in what the government at the time regarded as a serious matter.

There have been governments which regarded witchcraft as a serious matter. They were wrong, too. I don't think the government has any right to try to regulate the private behavior of the individual. Period. Both "liberals" and "conservatives" meddle far too much to suit me.

... Mezz -
