You could argue that currently no one is qualified to judge these issues yet. Both require more research. The ozone hole is not something that has been around a long time so it has not had years of study yet. I would say that things like that (or global warming) are things we should be conserned about, and perhaps take any cheap and easy countermeasures that we can find, but I disagree with Gore when he says that we should make "protecting the environment" in such cases "the central organizing principle" of our society and that we should "ban the internal combustion engine within 20 years" (BTW didn't Gore's book come out in the 80s? That would mean that internal combustion engines have to go soon.) As for "Son of Star Wars", I think countermeasures to nuclear weapons are quite possible that doesn't mean that we will succeed in developing, producing and deploying a viable effective system in the near future. I believe that any one who is intelligent and has a good amount of general knowledge is competent to form an opinion without years of education or research specialized in this area. Sure they can be wrong, but so can the experts. (This is shown not only by the history of experts being wrong but by the fact that experts come down on both sides and obviously some of them have to be wrong).I can understand how lots of average Americans of the right-wing persuasion feel insulted and threatened by people like Gore, but I don't think they're well served by that attitude. I do feel slightly threatend by liberal politicians because they want often want to increase taxes and regulations. Even when they do cut taxes it is usually in the form of "targeted tax cuts", where you can some of your money back if you do what the politician wants you to do. Unfortunately many Republicans follow along with the Democrats and there ideas. Republicans want usu. move to increase the size and scope of the federal government as well just a little less. Anyone know when the last time the federal government spent less in inflation adjusted dollars then they did the year before? How about when this happened two years in a row? Did it ever happen 3? TimP.S. In the interests of full disclosure, I was one of those "undervoters" for President. Couldn't bring myself to cast a vote for any of them. P.S. In the interests of full disclosure I voted for Bush. He is not really as conservative as I would like but IMHO was the best candidate available.
