Bland, I don't know any of them in person, but I've run into dozens here on SI and read the writings of their fellows on links they've provided. I first encountered the phenomenon on the Y2K thread over a year ago. I have no way of assessing the extent of it, but it's common enough around here that is must be more than fringe.

Since then I've been engaging some of the more articulate posters of that mind set on various threads trying to understand what mental process takes them there, totally without success. But I keep trying because it's just so incomprehensible to me.

What makes SI so interesting is that you encounter points of view and ways of processing information that you don't run into in real life. The problem is that the format doesn't really lend itself to mutual understanding. People would rather flame each other than communicate.
