andreas:

"The black eye to the Dimension 8100, which incorporates the first major Dell chassis redesign in about four years, is something "the company cannot afford," Gray said.

He added, "There's a risk here that end-user customer satisfaction could fall."

Sounds like Dell is approaching the precipice and needs to enlist the support of a reliable supplier...and one whose products offer improved price/performance...Perhaps the palomino will provide some relief for Dell's increasingly beleaguered product lineup!!!

No doubt it's somewhat age related, but I just can't see PC's primarily as a source of entertainment akin to my sound system and TV/DVD combo. I received Dell's catalog a few days ago and the appearance of stylized cases is kinda neat but THX certified sound systems and P4 chips at high prices for the sake of watching movies on a screen inferior to real entertainment gear I bought for that purpose is beyond comprehension IMVHO. OTOH, Dell's catalog is a masterpiece of temptation right down to the ridiculously low base prices on P4 systems that must be stripped as hell. I didn't check the configurations but from what I've read I'd guess the base prices are akin to base prices on American cars and serve the same purpose. If there is to be a marriage between PC's and the rest of the electronic entertainment world it seems to me it will have to occur at much less than the price of a P4 system. And when real work is to be done at the machine a much cheaper/faster Athlon will be considerably more attractive than the strange concoction Intel/Dell have created.

PS. Having ranted briefly I must admit to having a nephew in med school who recently told me that he uses his computer mostly for listening to music!!! Fortunately his parents had the good sense to send him off to school with an AMD computer, but if he ever suggests he needs a Dell/P4 or it's equivalent because it sounds better then we are in real trouble.

Re: "My Dimension 8100's ship date has changed more times

That article makes no sense.

I visited a Micro Center store today (in Westmont Illinois) and they had a stack of 4 P4 systems on the floor, boxed up and ready to go. The sign showed a price cut from 2,199 to 1,999 - the stack looked untouched, they don't appear to be selling them at all, but maybe they just re-arranged the display.

I can't imagine what's up with dell. I saw a P4 on display at a circuit city store over the weekend, it was listed as being on sale, too. No "last one" sign so I doubt there weren't any left.

If Dell is having trouble keeping these systems in stock, they're the only ones.

Regards,

Dan

PS - I stopped by a nearby screwdriver shop to ask if they'd heard anything about the Iwill 266R (DDR board, Ali chipset) or the PCChips 810LMR (integrated SiS chipset). They hadn't heard of the Iwill board, but I was handed an 810LMR! (Which I bought!)

The integrated boards are here! They are seriously here! This shop was not a leading edge vendor. The board includes on board integrated video with resolution up to 1920x1200 at 16M colors, integrated 10/100 ethernet, integrated hardware DVD, supports 266MHZ FSB Athlons, has onboard modem, ATA 100 IDE, onboard sound, and cost $95 from a guy who buys from a distributor! It includes Wordperfect Suite 8 on the driver CD!

Stick a Duron on one of these and you have a P3 killer! Celeron isn't even worth discussing.

SiS boards are often a little iffy when they first come out, so I'll see how it goes. I'll be playing with it over the holidays (and I'll also pick up an Iwill board, if I can find one)
