A few years back, we bargained into our contract a clause saying that management cannot willy-nilly start spying on people's phone calls, voice mail or e-mails ... either intra-workplace or the Internet. Management can only do such monitoring if they suspect abuse and if the president of the union local is notified. Reason we did this is that several years ago management stooges got on the computer system and went looking for intra-workplace messages between union bargaining committee members. One of the suits on the other side of the bargaining table admitted such to another worker shortly before he quit his job to get into religious work full-time.

This Big Brother monitoring is not at all unusual in a lot of workplaces these days.
