Today I figured I'd spend an hour or so working on my most excellent '85 Nissan 300ZX.

It's been running a bit rough lately. Miles per gallon have suffered some. The exhaust has been smoking when I first fire it up. It's begun leaving oil spots on the garage.

My diagnosis was a broken diaphragm in the fuel pressure regulator, a small metal goodie on the front of the engine, right at the top. I mean it's in plain sight. Nothing covering it up.

How hard could it be to replace this thing?

Sigh. There is nothing easy to work on on this engine. There is no clearance for anything. They must hire midgets, or elves, or hobbits to work on them.

This pressure regulator is held in place by four bolts and five hoses. It wasn't going anywhere. It took me an hour and a half just to get a wrench onto one of those stinking bolts. What a nightmare. I thought I was going to have to remove the fan to get to it. But I did get it replaced. Lousy $90 little piece of tin junk (and that's a good price for it). Took me hours.

But I did get rid of the exhaust smoke. And the car runs much better. I'm not sure it's perfect-- there may still be something else in the emission control system that needs to be replaced. It undoubtedly will be expensive, and impossible to get to.

Who designs this stuff? People who don't work on it...
