Re: "Is time, then, the ultimate ground, ..."

No. It is just one of the "dimensions," the fourth dimension.

Best wishes,

I2

I had this notion today as I rode, perhaps due to hypoxia from overexertion (it is a steep hill), that each of us was a self-contained universe about the size of a ping-pong ball created as a result of extraterrestrial computer science AI lab courses. The aliens used to throw these out till they found that each one had a sentience inside it. For a while they were given as novelty and gag gifts like the Singing Bass. A small cottage industry sprang up and soon it became a real craze like Pet Rocks. Finally, there was such moral outrage that the campus experiments were stopped, but the production of ping-pong ball universes continued for another 20 years until their production and insertion into lava lamps was prohibited by Galactic Order 562.

Now the ping-pong ball universes are stockpiled in a large cave near Regulus in an old uranium mine. I guess this is a fusion of TP's mad-alien-science-experiment-gone-wrong with something akin to The Matrix.

When I closed my eyes to catch my breath, I saw a face looking back at me. Funny, the Cosmic Force looked a little like Mel Gibson (about 30 years old, but a little heavier) in a room with a supercomputer. He had the same crew cut that I give my son in the summer. As I opened my eyes, the current illusion of my so-called reality returned as Mel closed the porthole. I closed them again to see the Cosmic Force, but Mel was gone...

Okay, everyone turn to Australia and pray to Mel Gibson's homeland. Three or four times a day should do it.

Time as we know it began with the big bang. Time is the result of change so if nothing was changing there was no time. If there are changes outside our universe then it could be like time in it's own right, but it's not our time. Only things which react and affect our universe are within our time.

merely a tool or device of consciousness?
No, the universe would unfold just fine if there were no audience. Stars and life forms evolved before any creature developed consciousness. Perhaps many universes begin, evolve, and go extinct without anyone being the wiser.
