Well, maybe not quite 10, but certainly up to nine. Actually, to know he was going to win, all he needed was the ability to count the fingers on one hand. In the end, that's the only thing that mattered: To what ends would the majority in the Supreme Court resort in order to be able to hand W. the election? Whether this is true or not is irrelevant because that's the impression the world has been left with. This election has shattered the myth that U.S. elections are pristine and transparent, and that the U.S. Supreme Court is a venerable institution above the fray. If anything, this shows that while everyone was demanding the accurate count of millions of votes, or even a few thousand disputed votes by hand, all we really needed, like W., was the ability to count to five. There appear to be two sets of winners in this fiasco, and neither of them is named Bush or Gore. Bush, at best, is instantly a lame-duck president, and Gore, barring a radical transformation of his persona, is now politically irrelevant. The first winners are ideological conservatives who stand to maintain their dominance on the Supreme Court -- and all that it implies -- including the ability to anoint presidents. The second unlikely winner is ... the Democratic Party. The arguments of the five reinforce the opinion that they weren't interested in remedying the situation, but rather, were in search of arguments to fit their objective. The most glaring example was Judge Scalia, who didn't seem to grasp the idea that a successful contest of any election means having to disregard the certified totals. That drove home the point that the five were simply fishing for an explanation to justify their seemingly preordained mission. =============== balance of article at: voznuestra.com ... Mezz -
