Jorj- I was surprised at Frank's comment about dialtone myself. IMHO I'm sure about 98% of the population, do expect the phone to offer up a dialtone 99.999% of the time we pick it up.

IMO you are correct about the telco's perceived advantage in marketing data services-Realiability. So if they just use this huge advantage to their ability, then I imagine they do have a strong weapon to use against the cablecos.

Although my ancedotal evidence of how poor the cable TV reception is in my house is not nearly as bad as yours, it's similar. And sadly I do come to expect the signal to drop out on a random basis. -MikeM(From Florida)

It was a euphemism. To be more precise, I should have stated that "concerns" about dial tone are virtually non-existent in the ILEC world. I thought that by providing the book reference threadsters would gain sufficient clue about my intent. So much for license of authorship.

But upon second glance the McGraw-Hill Book Store web site doesn't appear to do too much in the way of editorial elucidation about the books in their catalog.

By "non-existence" I meant that Dial Tone has become so reliable that it has been elevated to to the point where it has disappeared into the normal background noise of our lives, just like the sidewalks outside our buildings, or the trees that line our neighborhoods.

We don't stop to take note of every one of those, either. So it is with with dial tone, you wouldn't ordinarily take the time to make a specific note of it, or the time to make a deliberate observation of it - except for now, now that I've mentioned it.
