Kodak Personal Picture Maker

Aus and thread

I am quite impressed with the Kodak-Lexmark Personal Picture
Maker 200. Best Buy had one on display when I visited them
yesterday. The clerk was not able to give me a sample printout,
so I will only comment on the features of the model 200.

1. The price is $199.95. That surprised me because I had
expected it to be around $400, the price of an HP competitive
printer.

2. The clerk mentioned that he would have preferred a little
better resolution than the 1200 x 1200 of the model 200.

3. It is a stand-alone unit that will accept CF or SmartMedia,
but not the Memory Schtick.

4. There is a small color LCD screen on the front control panel
that allows you to see any photograph that is stored on your
memory card.

5. You can observe any photograph that is stored on your
memory card before printing out. Such things as cropping can
be done before printing.

6. Many printout sizes can selected, including a thumbnail
printout of the stored photos, on one sheet of 8 1/2" x 11"
paper.

I thought that the price of the ink cartridges was a little steep, in
the $35 to $40 range, but maybe that is par for the course.

I am wondering what effect this new breed of color printers will
have on the SanDisk Digital-Photofinishing Kiosks. The main
advantage of the Kiosk processing, as I see it, would be the
permanency of the image.
