From ixbt labs:

Intel to Introduce Product Changes: New D0 Core Stepping [5:44 am] Rat
Intel today reported that they will introduce some changes to their current Pentium III CPUs. Namely, they will change the processor core stepping from the current C0 to new D0. As a result, there will be a couple of other inevitable changes:

CPUID change from 0686h for C0 Step to 068Ah for D0 Step.
The Vcc operating voltage will change from 1.70V For C0 Step to 1.75V for D0 Step.
The Thermal Design Power increased.
The 1GHz line item will contain both the FC-PGA2 package with an Integrated Heat Spreader (IHS), as well as the current FC-PGA package.
This is most likely to be cause by Intel’s desire to increase the amount of fit CPUs coming out, which could work at higher core frequencies. It is especially important for the company taking into account that next year all Pentium III processors working at lower frequencies will be little by little discontinued and removed from the market. Besides, this move will help Intel to simplify the transition from the current FC-PGA to the new FC-PGA2, which will be used in the upcoming Tualatin CPUs and will be supported by the i815 B-step chipset. New Intel 815/E/EP "B-step" core logic sets will be shipping starting in Q2 2001. First samples of new CPU with D0 core stepping will be available within January 2 – January 19, 2001. First shipment of renewed processors is expected starting from March 5, 2001.

Re: "Perhaps, Paul, just perhaps, AMD has no need to hurry product evolution, given that their 10 to 12 million Athy Y2000 goal will be achieved, "

You have a habit of rationalizing AMD's failures.

Must come with lots of practice.
