Telephony over the web:

Net2Phone.com
Dialpad.com

I've tried Net2Phone once. There's a little lag in voice
transmission, but considering the cost --- it's okay.

limtex,
re:voice over IP

We use Yahoo Instant messenger which comes with Net2Phone.
Works good, there is a second or two delay which may take getting use to. Also we use it a lot for voice between two computers on the internet.

You can download what you need and get a login for free from www.yahoo.com , you will see a link for "messenger".
Windows is supported for audio, but Linux is text only so far.

edit, I just visited the site and it says phone calls in US only...........

Can your son get online? Then you can use voice.
