If you get down to fundamentals, isn't it just the primal tug-of-war between self-interest and altruism. In the end, self-interest usually wins.

Walkingshadow,

>>other than trivial differences in the things exchanging hands and superficial differences in the participants, such as socioeconomic status and such like....<<

I think I'm an honest and decent person.

When I imagine myself on the streets of LA without a job or good education, the range of possibilities for my behavior is fairly wide.

When I imagine myself as a leading strategist, broker, investment banker, partner, etc... and think about all the millions I would have (that I wouldn't need to be happy) I can't imagine myself behaving the way many people like that behave.

I don't behave that way now.

I understand your points, but the extremity of the behavior
(not everyone of course) over the last few years was a little shocking to me. Perhaps I was very naive.
