Chaz,

"Again it is very interesting to me that WCDMA seems to have various Asian versions as well as the "UMTS" European version."

I expect there are more names than versions. Asia prefers wCDMA - Europe is now using UMTS - but it appears that 3GSM will become the preferred moniker for Europe. They appear repelled by anything sounding vaguely CDMA - which is fine by me. <g> I find "3GSM" rather amusing.

NTT developed its system using 99 IMT2000 standards revisions - but revisions are common. 1x EVDO will have revisions as soon as 3GPP2 can agree on procedure. I understand that NTT's wCDMA is different in that it will use a modified GSM map - in light of it not having an existing GSM base.

SK plans to merge existing 1x systems with 3G IMT2000 Direct Spread using a "DS-41" system with "hooks and extensions" that may not yet be developed. ((See Slide 16 at cdg.org
for SK's evolution plans.))

Contrary to some perceptions, specifications for the wCDMA version for 3G IMT2000 (UMTS) is farther along than for CDMA2000. ((I'm getting sick and tired of all of these acronyms!!!)) 1xEVDO has applied for IMT2000 compliance status - but only functions at 1.25mhz. 1xEVDV performance criteria specify compatibility with both 1.25 and 5mhz spectrum - and this would probably be the CDMA2000 standard that might attract Euro interest. Sadly, 1xEVDV progress has slowed, and if 3GPP2 approval is delayed, ITU review for IMT2000 approval might well be delayed to 2002. I suspect 3rtt will be abandoned - there is really little need for it with 1xEVDV.

"I for one look forward to watching the "evolution" of WCDMA in various countries and regions."

I think that Asia and European wCDMA/UMTS systems are being, will be, developed in conformance with the same specifications. This is perhaps why it should be no surprise that Operators are hitching their wagons to the wCDMA/UMTS star - they have agreement on a common, developed interface that they had a hand in developing - even if it is yet to be proven in the field. For that matter, 1xEV has yet to be proven in the field through the construction of a functioning network.

In regard to NTT's network - the scale is so small - and the user group so controlled - that it may well be impossible to know its performance or operational status.

"Meanwhile in the real world the 1x 1xEVDO and 1xEVDV process is where the test of 3G will take place over the next year or two."

1x next year for Asia - and probably early 2002 until full blown service in the US. ((Sprint and Verizon must sell cheap data - with applications targeted to youth and recreational use to break T's back!!)) Perhaps full blown 1x EVDO in Asia early 2002 and probably early 2003 in the US?? As for 1x EVDV? Better get those specifications completed!

I look forward to JPhone's wCDMA network (powered by SpinCO??) and hope that Korea jump starts its wCDMA schedule. And perhaps NTT will appreciate SpinCo's wares after sampling them mid-2001? And, of course, China really has to happen for 2 & 2.5G. The bigger the better.

A most interesting story to follow - I'm sure you'll agree.

Happy Holidays, Chaz - I wish you and your's all the best.
