We don't elect people strictly by popular vote. If that were the case, there wouldn't be a need for dilineation of the House of Representatives. It's clear that there's a large differentiation of interests and needs by locality, and that an election by popular vote fails to address those different interests. Considering that the total population is over 250 million, a half million doesn't amount to a hill of beans in mandate any more than a majority of one electoral vote over the requirement.

I agree with you. I think the "Map" is irrelevant. Just as irrelevant as those who claim Bush is not legitimate because he is alleged to have lost the popular vote (which as previously stated is factually inaccurate because we will never know who won the popular vote or the vote in FL). Both miss the point that Bush became winner under the rule of law and no further legitimacy for his Presidency is needed.

Perhaps you want to elect the President of California. Outside of California, Bush won by 700,000 votes.

--Gorton won 35 of the 39 counties in Washington State but still lost the senatorial election to Cantwell on Nov. 7--

there's a move afoot in washington to split the state, east/west. they're missing the point though (more on that below).

as it is the 'seattle area' can outvote the rural areas. it used to be that the rural areas provided balance in the voting but with the influx of population to the seattle corridor, the rural areas have no clout any more in state issues.

but those who want to split washington, east-west are missing a point.

the best solution would be to split both washington and oregon. then western oregon/washington could be a new state, and eastern oregon/washington could be the other state. they could call the coastal area 'stalin' and the eastern area, 'hitler.'
