Of course the popular vote matters. Only a very naive person would think it doesn't matter. Reagan possessed considerable clout over a Democratic Congress in '80 because the American people backed him with both a huge electoral and popular vote. Just the opposite has occurred with GWB. Reagan had a built-in legitimacy; GWB has a built-in illegitimacy, because of three factors: (1) his brother's state put him over the top; (2) he lost the popular vote in both the U.S. and also likely in Florida; (3) he won the election on a 5-4 vote of the partisan U.S. Supreme Court.

You would like to think that the popular vote does not matter, but in fact it does, based on the large number of posters on this board who declare daily that it doesn't matter.

We all know better. A half-million votes is indeed significant.
