"With breathtaking market declines forcing U.S. Net companies to pause and reassess the value of the currency they've been using to make acquisitions, expansion-minded European companies are jetting in, cash in hand, to pick up some strategic bargains.

In the past two weeks, for example, three new Euro-American Net deals have been announced. Amsterdam-based information services company Wolters Kluwer is buying legal information firm Loislaw.com (LOIS:Nasdaq-news) for $95 million in cash. Seat Pagine Gialle, the yellow pages subsidiary of Telecom Italia (TI:NYSE ADR - news), is buying email marketing company NetCreations (NTCR:Nasdaq - news) for $111 million in cash. Meanwhile, in a deal that rearranges control of pre-existing U.S. assets, the U.K.'s Pearson (PSO:NYSE ADR - news) is dropping $26.9 million in greenbacks to buy a minority stake in MarketWatch.com (MKTW:Nasdaq - news) from Pearson's majority-owned Data Broadcasting (DBCC:Nasdaq - news).

These new deals come not long after the closing of, by far, the biggest Euro-U.S. Internet deal, the acquisition of Massachusetts-based Lycos by Spain's Terra Networks to create Terra Lycos (TRLY:Nasdaq ADS - news). "There's a bit of a pattern here," says David Braunschvig, an investment banker at Lazard. He represented Bertelsmann in itsdeal to acquire CDNow earlier this year, and his firm represented Terra Networks in the Lycos acquisition.

In one way, these deals make sense in the context of megamergers in all categories over the past year -- Deutsche Telekom (DT:NYSE ADR - news) going after wireless provider VoiceStream (VSTR:Nasdaq - news), consumer products conglomerate Unilever (UN:NYSE ADR - news) acquiring Bestfoods and even UBS (UBS:NYSE ADR - news)buying PaineWebber."

The above is just part of the article. As of 7/12/00 Wallstreet has seen over $600 billion dollars in TransAtlantic transactions. Swiss Bank UBS Warburg buys PaineWebber. AIG buys TransAmerica. Aetna is selling their financial services to European company ING. Is this the year for NICM? Looking forward to the website and our future in the banking community.

Happy New Year to everyone
