As I have watched the events of the past 10 days unfold I am outraged by the plight of all the disenfranchised voters in Florida. There is no way that in Palm Beach country thousands of Jewish senior citizens would have voted for Pat Buchanan. Doing so would be detrimental to their health! And think of the injustice of all the African Americans and Haitian immigrants who were sent home before they had a chance to exercise their right to vote. As Reverend Jesse Jackson has said, "Here in West Palm, we have seen migrant workers, Blacks and Jews, huddled in a small church, crying for their franchise to be honored. We have seen sons and daughters of the Holocaust and persecution, rickety boats from Haiti - descendants of slaves and persecution - bound by fears on the one hand, and hope and promise on the other. The stakes are high. We can afford to lose an election, but not our franchise and the integrity of our democracy. Our right to vote and be counted is the sacred, non-negotiable issue here today. The remedy may be a fair and accurate first count; it may be a hand recount. The judge may study the trend of voter intent; or call for a revote. It must not be the trash heap and furnace. Democracy must not go up in smoke." By denying these voters the chance to have their ballots re-examined by hand Katherine Harris, Florida's Secretary of State, is taking this election into her own hands. She's making sure that she delivers Florida's 25 electoral votes to George W. Bush - for whom she was the Florida campaign co-chairman and whose brother signs her paychecks.
