KLP: You're asking the wrong person. As a young man, Bill Rehnquist was pretty good at intimidating Democratic voters when they arrived to vote in Arizona on Election Day. Even got his butt physically thrown out of the polling place on one occasion. Over the years, the Repubs have gotten a lot more sophisticated in denying the disenfranchised the right to vote -- bad voting equipment; requiring voters to vote in one place in the primary, another place in the general election; not allowing straight ticket voting; not bringing updated records of residence to the polling site on Election Day; installing better polling equipment in the tony suburbs first, forcing inner-city residents to wait in line much longer than suburban residents to cast their ballot; on and on and on. No wonder the NAACP is outraged. Seems to me, having visited the race track on more than one occasion, it wouldn't be too hard to set up an election like the tracks set up a race card. Put a dozen Macs in a room. First screen page would have a likeness of Bush and Gore, Buchanan and Nader, with their names and party affiliation below each face. Touch which one you want to vote for. Page 2 (candidates for senator) would then come on the screen in a second. Same deal. At the end, all your votes would appear on the screen. If you wanted to change any vote, no problem. When you're all done, punch a button on the computer and your vote would be registered both at the local polling place and in the state capital. Probably will never happen in my lifetime because the Repubs will continue to oppose ways to make voting easier.
