Yes, the issue was economic. Slavery would not have existed had there not been an economic benefit to it. Do you think the institution of slavery was established to enslave blacks? Wrong! Do you think the African tribal leaders who caught the people did it just to enslave blacks? Perhaps, but you can bet there was an economic benefit to them as well. Do you think the people who owned and manned the ships did it just to enslave blacks? Wrong again. They did it to make an easy profit. Do you think the person who bought the slave did it just to enslave blacks? Wrong again. He wanted a source of cheap labor.
