Chicago--Dec. 29--The Purchasing Management Association of Chicago
said its index of area economic activity in December was at an adjusted
44.7, compared with 41.7 in November. The prices paid component was at
61.0, vs.
November's 59.1, while supplier deliveries were at 49.2, vs. 54.6, and the
employment index was at 44.9, vs. 39.0.

A reading above 50.0 generally indicates expansion, while one below
50.0 usually means economic contraction.
The purchasing managers' group said many indices remained near
historic lows as the barometer rose 3 points, but continued to signal a
decline. Order backlogs set a new low, while inventories were at the
lowest since April 1991.
Prices paid rose slightly.
The National Association of Purchasing Management's survey for
November is due Tuesday. The national index in November was 47.7.
About 200 companies participate in the Chicago-area survey, which
covers northern Illinois and northwest Indiana. End
