Jefferson's inaction allowed the same situation that concerned him about the dependence of his slaves to continue up until the end of the Civil War. In the end, he was right to feel that way, but he was nevertheless as much a part of the problem as any slave owner. What's more important was that he was, as President, in a position to do something about it.

He was a hypocrite in that regard, and deserves the criticism.
