flapjack,
I challenge you to post up documented proof of any Bush reading-learning disability. This is a falsehood perpetrated by you left-wingers. Please refrain from posting such false-hoods in the future.

Btw, my wife worked in special education for many years as well. In my opinion, the government spends too much money on the program for the results achieved. Also, you seem to suggest that the retarded or handicapped are not participants in special ed. Would you please explain this statement?

Yes, you are correct regarding a teacher shortage. I know teachers who just retired early who stated that they would not go back to public schools for $100k per year. Public education has changed drastically in the last 10 years, especially during Clinton's tenure. Schools are now called 'government schools' for a reason. They earned it.

Re: "Have the number of special ed kids increased sufficiently to explain the fall in the performance of the U.S. education system?"

I do not know that answer, nor do I know where you're coming from in this regard.

You don't?

ask how many special education students are enrolled in the school.
You clearly want to explain the large difference in performance of public and private schools performance as due to non-acceptance of special ed kids.

And if you want to blame the declining performance of public schools on this, you're going to have to come up with increasing percentages.

And finding more through better diagnoses doesn't make things any worse; they were there dragging down performance before discovery and are still there after. In fact, if the special ed they receive works, scores should RISE!

This started with that Islamic school and those display cases. You don't think that the fact that they were proud of their academic achievements rather than football victories might have something to with this?
It wasn't because of new, expensive facilities; they had bought an old school that was abandoned by the public school system. Not good enough for them.

ADA loosened the classification of problem kids for special ed. These are under the category of behavioral disorders. It all depends on the capability of the parent and the teachers as well as the kid to determine what is problem that can't be addressed with discipline in a normal teaching environment (as opposed to special ed).
