I don't doubt the stories in the article you posted, but in defense of DSL, I do think the RBOCs eventually will figure out a system to eliminate the truck roll and then costs will come down and economies of scale kick in. The distance problem won't be solved until we get fiber to the curb. Then there'll be a switch to VDSL at 52mbps.

Europe is seeing a huge upsurge in DSL in part because they already had ISDN and provisioning is similar, and in part because they have fewer distance problems. China is also beginning to accept DSL. I know TI is setting up an office in Taiwan to handle the increase in business.

Next year we'll see a big upswing in DSL and 2002 it'll take off. VDSL will probably start to show up a few years after that.
