Regarding dial-up modems (analog): even with a 56K modem, speed regularly falls back (due to copper line quality and position of the wire in the strand). Modems adapt these speeds, up and down, at the cost of CPU load. Some analog providers limit the bandwith at 33k, with far less needs to speed adaptation. LeoWeb and BESTDirect. BEST direct is a standalone application (so-called Level III by the techies, referring to the 3th level of the ISO 7 level communication scheme). Meaning that the application itself negociates the communication protocol. Whereas browser based systems have more applications elements to achieve the same work. (More CPU hungry). If you run LeoWeb, and that application only on a specific computer that will be reserved for that purpose only, you shouldn't observe sensible delays. Or delays of the magnitude of those you would observe in hopping. Some ISP would connect you through cheap backbones where you would observe up to 1k milliseconds delays which would add up at each hop. Your RT information could be delayed up to 10 secs. Typical delay would be anywhere between 1.5 secs and 6 secs. (That is why pros use direct data links). Does not matters much if a browser based applicaton would cost an extra 0.25 or 0.125 secs. Refco IBs, there is a list of 22, sort of: go to peregrinefinancial.com scroll down to the end. You'll see "Select Brokerage Firm" with a drop own list "Select One". BESTDirect V6.0 has one screen with all info you need to trade: RT current positions, RT current margin, RT buying power, one click and trade. That is why, I am biased towards Peregrine too. I intend to daytrade (up to 6 times a day, or none). LeoWeb has improved stop limits abilities. And Refco is a clearing house (Peregrine is an FMC). So, it could be that LeoWeb would have faster fills. Nothing simple. Best would be to open simulated trading accounts, although simulated is not the real thing. (Real fills). I will do a test ride also on RCG's RCGDirect. Still 3 platforms in competition for me, but I still place a (affordable) phone access to the broker above particularities on the online platform. Hey, TTYL in the next millenium. Happy new year all.
