I am not arguing the finer points of moral calculation with you. Suffice it to say that perjury is not ordinary "personal lying"....

General Douglas McArthur (remember him?)thought we should not get involved in Vietnam. This was not a clear cut thing. Remember, a lot of old Right Isolationists were skeptical of NATO, but their cause had been discredited by the role of the America First movement in holding us back from entering World War II. Derek is pretty much correct in saying that we could not just pull out, without jeopardizing our other alliance relationships, once committed. That does not address the "Americanization" of the war to begin with. For the rest, I refer you to an earlier post.....

Try "I do not find secrecy in personal situations necessarily disreputable." and see where it leads you.

Are you nuts????

That's an absolutely incredible statement.

Comparing personal relationships to your duties when you are in possession of valuable military knowledge is simply absurd.

Over the years I have had many security clearances. Those clearances did not require me to lie in personal or normal business matters; they did require me not to disclose the classified information I knew. You can do that without lying; most of the time simply saying "I can't talk about that" is suuficient.
