I question (with an open mind) whether QCOM has base control of the base technology of W-CDMA. At this time, I tend to think not.

Why not, if all flavors depend on CDMA.

To me, it seems like, if a carrier wants to support high data rates and higher bandwidth utilization, there are multiple flavors available with different features and capabilities which may or may not be desirable in their particular circumstance, but *all* of which depend on CDMA. QCOM doesn't need to control the GSM bits in WCDMA also to still have control over that core CDMA technology. SpinCo needs to compete on the whole, but QCOM only has to retain control of the core.
