No one, with the exception of an emigre who wrote a book that was widely dismissed, thought that the Soviet Union was about to disappear. Ronald Reagan was the only politician whom I know to have entertained the notion. The fact is, Khruschev was "retired" for less liberalization than Gorbachev permitted, but the Kremlin needed someone who could deal with Reagan. They were afraid of SDI, for example. Why do you think they torpedoed the Reykjavik agreement if we would not give it up? In the end, the competitive pressure placed on the Soviet Union did it in now, instead of waiting another century or more........

"The severe alcoholism in the Soviet Union was indicative of the loss of individual direction and dispair that comes from a subdued ego and an inability to change ones lifestyle."

Guess you could just do a "replace all" on Soviet Union with George W and get the same answer...on a more serious note, and a question I have posed here on numerous occasions with nary a response, is what lead George W to drinking in the first place and what cured him of his disease?
