Ailing Net firm may quit tony address

[The Boston Globe, 1/6/2001 page C1; link may expire]

The tony new, perhaps soon to be old address is World Trade Center East on the South Boston Waterfront. A move to Maynard is reportedly being considered.

If Breakaway's experience mimics that of other Net companies that have sublet space, it could even make money. The space might bring a little under $60 a square foot, $10 more than Breakaway is paying, a source said.

Let's get movin' while that deal is still available!

Once in Maynard, maybe BWAY management will start acting a bit more like Ken Olsen, and that won't be a bad thing. Ditching the expensive digs is a good start. If the company is truly net-centric, there's no need to be on the waterfront in Boston. "To attract the young, mobile work force crucial to their success" - that reasoning was faulty, imo. Perhaps it made sense briefly, when demand for bodies exceeded supply, but those days are over. They need people who care more about building a company than about the scenery.

We have a downturn, and for the first time management is being tested (bringing it public was not a test). The quick-buck artists like Frank Selldorff are out the door. Now we'll see what Gordon Brooks is made of.
