Tejek responded to TIm's comments:

I would say that having the ability to protect our country
its allies and its interests amounts to a good and beneficial program.

With this:
Yes, I know. Our manifest destiny as a nation is to protect
the world. And the world is very willing to let us spend the
$$$ to do just that.

I'm presuming you and Tim are discussing/debating the once moribund Reagan-era Star Wars program that everyone says Bush will try to revive? If it is.. I hope Tim knows that Europe and Canada are opposed to this - viewing it as questionable technology and also the fear that all it will do is cause Russia and China to build more nuclear arms in an attempt to overwhelm any defence shield put up.. thus renewing a long-dead arms race.

Interestingly, Canada and Russia just signed a memorandum or agreement when President Putin visited Ottawa a few weeks ago to jointly push the US not to proceed with this pie-in-the sky scheme and to oppose its implementation.
