On a slightly different note, I saw an ad this morning for a new mouse from Sony that has a built-in slot for reading memory sticks. Seems like a pretty good idea that would eliminate the need for one more desktop gizmo. Perhaps SanDisk should be the first to steal the latest here.

That headphone jack isn't just for headphones, it's a...ahem...standard interface that can hook up to powered speakers, stereo, input jack on a car deck, whatever.

Not so! The impedance is different. For example I have an MPTrip which is a CD player that plays MP3 files as well as CD wav files. ($115) It has an output jack for earphone, but also a separate output jack which outputs to an input jack to a stereo system. The size is the same, but the results are very different when I plug the output to the aux input of my home stereo amplifier(Good sounds), than when I do the same using the earphone output of the MPTrip. ( Crappy distorted sound!)

Intel just figured a way to put another interface which does the same thing and include an A/C adapter and charge an extra $60.

I also got an adapter which goes from my MPTrip to my car cassette player, so I can play MP3 files in my car stereo as well as through my home hi-fi.

One CD will hold about 7 hours of high quality MP3 music. But it won't fit in my shirt pocket. Big deal!
