Bradley Toland, Jr. who stated.. "For two reasons. One, because communication was lacking 230 yrs ago. And second, because the founding fathers knew the masses weren't all that smart and it might be better to have an elected representative that was. As an example, the masses (dolts) in New York and California would have us all under socialism/communism if everyone's vote counted--even though it's in no one's interest. Just look who's senator in NY. A person who wanted to nationalize a third of our economy with the brilliant Magaziner in charge. Thank God we have an electoral college in place to check the masses.?Message 15114841 But does the Electoral College really work? You claim "There are important reasons for the electoral college. One is to insure fairness for the smaller states. If it were simply a matter of popular vote then all you city slickers would be the only ones electing the Prez. And our candidates would NEVER campaign in Des Moines because those podunk farmers are only worth a coupla thousand votes." Did either candidate campaign in Hawaii?? How about Alaska? The Candidates still concentrate their time and pledged representation in the major Populas States. NY/FLA/TX/CA/MI etc.. The smaller states still get left out!! Oh!! You can listen to their stories of "WHY" we use the Electoral College.. But, the stories are just that... Let's look at California.. Are all the voters in California represented by the Electoral College Process? What about the Farmer's in the San Joaquin Valley, Imperial Valley, Far Nothern California Counties.. No the candidates visit LA/Orange/San Digo/San Francisco/San Jose and surrounding areas.. Are all of the fine citizens in California represented / visited? No.. Only the populas areas. So in effect, the Electoral College and it's reasons for existence are very minimal, if at all.. Special interests still prosper in the large "Electoral" rich States.. While the smaller states are swept under the rug!! The Power of Special Interest Groups would actually decrease in a "One Person/One Vote" Presidential Election system.. The voice of the farmer in Imperial Valley would be equal to the "city slicker" in downtown Los Angeles.. And the city slicker in Los Angeles' vote would equal the President of the Santee Republican Ladies Bridge Club.. "All men/women are created as equals".. I know I have heard that somewhere before!!
