<<Alaska and Hawaii don't get campaign time because of remoteness and the fact the election is in the bag there, anyway, HI for Dems, Alaska for Republicans. Neither Bush nor Gore campaigned in New York for the same reason. The candidates grovel in any state where they have a chance, if they're smart enough.>>

You see.. The Exact reasons why people say we need the Electoral College, are simply discounted because.. Oh! That state is too remote, That state is a foregone conclusion, etc.. If every vote counted.. Then the votes of those fine Republican citizens in Hawaii would count.. Or the Vote of the fine Democratic Citizens of Alaska, or Wyoming!!

They don't count under the present system, and only lead to voter apathy.. Why even go to the polls.. My vote will not make a difference, because their are many more Democrats in my State.. My vote is worthless.. I'll just stay home!! Which only strengthens the Political stranglehold a particular Political Party has within the confines of a State (Like NY). If every vote counted.. Then "candidate's could grovel in EVERY state".. Because every candidate would have "a chance" in every state!! That is a Democracy.. The current Electoral System guarantee's that the predominant Republican and Democratic parties will never be Threatened by a Third Party.. This is how the Governments of "Other Democratic Republics" guarantee that there will never be a threat to the current Political parties..

Look again at Iraq..

stm.it

The Parliament of Iraq is unicameral.

the National Assembly (Al Majlis Watani)
has 250 seats

Of the 250 members of the National Assembly are elected in 59 multi-member constituencies by absolute majority vote. 30 seats are allotted to the northern provinces where live the Kurdish minority. Voting is not compulsory.

Of course, in the United States.. Anyone meeting the requirements is eligible to run for President.. But, with the implied power of the ElectoraL.. Someone like a Nader, or Perot, NEVER really has a chance to win!! But, it makes for a good.. See we are a "Democracy" story line!! Just like other "rouge countries" who claim to be a "Democratic Republic"..
