The problem with your logic is that you are trying to divide the electoral intent to a fidelity that is greater than the founding fathers thought best/fair (for national elections). In case it's not obvious, this is the United STATES of America, and as such, each STATE is acknowledged to have unique status (based on things such as population) and equal status (based on existence as a state of the union).

The balance they created is that within each STATE, people are free to count their votes individually (ergo the vote counts), but then those statewide results are voted as the states best see fit (some like Maine actually can split electors, but most don't) in numbers based on the percentage of the nations population found in that state. This was done because the states were not willing to give up ALL of their self-governance to the union, which is what a less populated state would be doing in a purely democratic vote (see Wyoming and California). The people of Wyoming would be unable to make their voices heard for a particular candidate, if one suburban California locale decided they were in favor of another candidate.

P, your count-every-vote arguement against the electoral college sounds pretty scary if you extrapolate it out the the nation aa a whole. Listen to it when the word State is changed to Nation: (my changes in bold)

They (voters in a Nation's minority party) don't count under the present system, and only lead to voter apathy.. Why even go to the polls.. My vote will not make a difference, because their are many more Democrats in my Nation. My vote is worthless.. I'll just stay home!! Which only strengthens the Political stranglehold a particular Political Party has within the confines of a Nation.

The current Electoral System guarantee's that the predominant Republican and Democratic parties will never be Threatened by a Third Party..

Maybe, but it also guarantees that our country will never fall into the tyranny of one Freakin' Egghead Party X. The founding fathers, most of them (unlike us) were intimately acquainted with tyranny. They knew that checks and balances in a one party system don't amount to much balance. I guess the bottom line is, they felt that Civil War (between two parties) was preferrable to tyranny by one. Hence, the right to keep and bear arms, freely assemble, form militias, free press, unreasonable search and seizure, etc. etc.

I'll keep my electoral college, thank you very much.
