Had a couple of weird things happen this afternoon. Nick wanted to go to the Air and Space Museum, so I drove into DC and while I was looking at a display on satellites, got the idea of using a magnet to see whether any of them were made of steel. Had to buy a magnet in the gift shop, and then used it on the only satellite I could reach, and rats! The metal wasn't steel.

On the way home decided to drive past the Supreme Court building to see what preparations have been made for the Inauguration. Nothing so far. But while I was stopped at a red light a woman came up to the window on Nick's side of the car and asked me to help her. She said she was from Virginia and her car had a flat tire and she was scared. I asked what I could do to help, and she said that the Capitol police were going to help her get a tire and put it on for her and what she needed was money to help her buy a tire. I was kind of taken aback because when I heard the beginning of the pitch I thought she would ask for a ride or help with her car. But when I asked her where her car was she was a mite vague.

Unfortunately I didn't have any cash on me, but I carry a zip lock bag full of change for parking meters, so I gave her that - it might have had $10 in it. She looked at it kind of surprised and faded away into the darkness.

Nick looked ahead stoic the whole time. As I was driving away I asked him if he hadn't believed her story. He said he thought it was rather unbelieveable. But he's a tough customer.
