I'm with Nick, you were taken for a sawbuck. If the police were helping her what was she doing panhandling in the street? I had a similar thing happen at a motel in Florida with a dude and a story about tires. I called the police.

COby, I'm a pretty soft touch, but ouch. "She looked a mite vague." about where her car was? You could have let her use your car phone to call a friend? Given her a quarter for the call? Maybe you could have told Nick that you didn't believe her story either, but that she must really need money if she was willing to lie like that, and isn't it sad that she had to, and anyway, you would like to think that if you ever needed a little money in a situation of desperation, someone would care enough to give you some. Well, I probably would have given her a dollar, too, just because it was a different story from the WIll Work for Food guys with their McD bags and cigarettes who accost me at every stoplight in Dallas.
