Now, using our HTs (hand-held transceivers, commonly called handie-talkies) we can communicate with each other even when several miles apart.

That won't cut it for off road work. You no longer need, nor would you want, to rely on a daisy chain of ham operators to stay in touch. Plus, I'm too old to learn a new hobby. Ham radio was great when that's all there was. Ham nets still provide a valuable service to those not yet aware of the wonders of Globalstar. And for the chit chatters among us, it's probably a great place to hang out. Still, as Maurice would say, it's not the real dinkum when it comes to staying in touch these days. G* will quickly enough relegate ham radio exclusively to hobby status.

BTW, I don't bicycle, I motor cycle. The only thing I've seen fewer of lately than G* phones on motor cycles are ham radio rigs <g>.
