Pierre: "several miles apart"

I think you are taking that statement to the minimum.. With my 2 meter Handy Talkie.. I can hit a repeater 30 miles away,, With a 75W unit I can hit one 75 miles away.. That pretty much covers anywhere in the United States.

<it's not the real dinkum when it comes to staying in touch these days. G* will quickly enough relegate ham radio exclusively to hobby status.>

I think you should stop by and tell that to those "emergency communications seeking" Desert Rats... The reason I stopped to talk to them, was because I figured that these people travel to the most desolate areas of the US.. And if anyone needed a Sat Phone.. It would be this group... However, When you tell them how much it costs, and the monthly service fee, and the cost per minute.. They will be laughing all right...

Let's see.. A basic 2 meter amateur radio costs $150 bucks (New).. That's it.. For $150 bucks.. you have decent FM Coverage almost "Anywhere" in the United States.. With Globalstar. You need a $900 dollar handset, $50 bucks to activate it, 24.95 bucks a month to keep it activated. And $1.69 per minute.. I don't think you are going to get many converts!!! Don't ask me.. Ask the people who travel to some of the most remote areas in the United States... The Desert Rats..
