Repeaters are usually run by not-for-profit clubs. Memberships and usage can run between $5 and $20 a month with no per-minute charges like cell phone. This gives you the ability to stay in touch over a very large area.

Sorry, pcstel - this is fun stuff, but not the real deal. I'm not likely to take an RV base station with me, and I don't want to rely on the chance a club member is monitoring when I need help. Add to that the fact that I've still got to daisy chain info through an intermediary to get what, and even who, I want. Give me a phone that puts me in touch directly with the person I want (need) to talk to. There's a reason radio hasn't replaced the telephone. Now the G* phone is moving into what was previously radio only territory. The only advantage to radio is it's cheaper, though not by that much, considering what could be at stake.

And that's just the emergency aspect. I'm not likely to call my secretary, close a deal, address an office emergency, or just make small talk with a loved one - on a publicly monitored radio channel. The G* phone handles all emergencies better, and it has so much added non emergency utility I can't imagine this choice being too difficult. Now, if you want to chat over publicly monitored air waves just for grins - well everybody's got his own happy button. For me, I'll keep taking the real deal with me. 10-4, good buddy. Catch you on the flip flop.
