Uncleared landmines hinder a country's ability to rebuild a post-war
economy. The deliberate mining and booby trapping of bridges, roads,
irrigation channels, electricity networks and railways requires extensive
mine clearance as a precondition to reconstruction and rehabilitation of
a country's economy. If the mines remain, and the infrastructure stays
idle, then an economic dislocation occurs which, in turn, will exacerbate
local problems making countries even more dependent on foreign
humanitarian aid.
