Frankly, I don't believe your 'True Story' to be a true story. Normally, the big guy would have woken up with a splitting headache which would have forced him to open a window or two to ventilate his room. I think he died not so much because of the gas as for some other reason.

The story is not credible for another reason. Opening a door/window to enter his room would have introduced some oxygen gas which would form an explosive mixture with the methane in the room. Any sparks (from flipping an electric switch or from a lighter or from the frictional static electricity of garments/rug/carpet) would have kaboomed the mixture sending all flying sky high!!! out of the door/window.

BTW, such explosions have happened several times when pent-up barns (full of methane from fermenting dung and cattle- farting) in winter were visited by farmers smoking cigars.

A friend of mine was once sent sailing in the air. Fortunately he landed on a snow embankment and lived to tell the tale. Another guy was propelled onto a neighbor's rooftop when he opened the door of his countryhouse which was already partly filled with gas from a leaky stove.
