Tom,

I am currently trying to expand my knowledge in this area and make some practical use of data mining. In other words, I too am trying to answer the questions and will post what I learn.

Data mining is a stage in the evolution...

statistics and reports
data warehousing
olap/rolap
data mining
knowledge access

Data mining using techniques such as expert logic, algorithms, or neural networks to find relationships in data that might otherwise be overlooked, or not found for lack of resources. Data mining finds information in data without a question necessarily being asked.

Knowledge access takes this one step further and creates a layer of information/knowledge between the user and the data.

At this point I am not aware of companies that provide true data mining applications that have practical applications beyond small niche markets.

Regards,
Lee
