Mark, Cheeky, and Gottfried-- Thanks for your replies. I will definitely scope out Drive Image and QuikSync 2.

I do have the Iomega CD-ROM with 1-Step Backup and Restore. However, in re-running it (with an eye to using it with the Maxtor), it seems the version that they gave me is only usable with jaz or zip disks. For instance, there's no Windows "drop down" to choose a target drive (at least not in the version I've been provided). Maybe someone here can clear that up?

This 80 GB drive was purely intended to save data only, but in looking at Drive Image, I might re-think it and image the whole drive on there.

I'm also going to (RIGHT NOW!) make a zip rescue disk.

Thanks again for all your help.

Mark, Cheeky, and Gottfried --

Well, I called PowerQuest and none of their products support external-cable drives (mine is a 1394 drive) -- only zip, jaz, CDR or interneal EIDEs.

QuikSync is cool, too -- but, again, only for Iomega drives.

I'll check out Ghost from Symantec. Any other thoughts?

OK -- I feel like Scully (or is it Mulder?) --

Ghost doesn't support 1394 drives, either.

So, I finally got through to Maxtor themselves and spoke to their "firewire" guru. He was not aware of ANY backup product that would write to a 1394 drive. Essentially, backup software is designed for IDE to IDE (or EIDE to EIDE, if you prefer) transfers. Windows will present an external Maxtor drive as a drive, but the backup programs tend to go to the backup drives at a lower level. At that lower level, the 1394 drive appears as an external device, but not a pure-bred EIDE drive.

So, for now, I keep dragging, dropping, and overwriting my previous backup -- which means it takes many minutes to do a backup each night, which is a real deterrent to doing it, you know?

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

EDIT: And I find it really strange that the maker of the drive doesn't KNOW OF (much less OFFER) a backup utility. They claim the drive is for "storage" not "backup" but that's a pretty fine distinction without much of a difference.
